Birthday cakes have been a part of birthday celebrations in Western European countries since the middle of the 19th century . However, the link between cakes and birthday celebrations may date back to ancient Roman times. The first actual birthday cake was called Kinderfest. The person whose birthday it is may make a silent wish and then blow out the candles. It is also common for the person celebrating their birthday to cut the initial piece of the cake as a newlywed couple might with a wedding cake. The birthday boy/girl traditionally gets to eat the first piece of the cake. One of the widely recognised belief is that cutting the birthday cake before the birthday or cutting it twice, one on the birthday and one on the other day is recognised as a bad luck and misfortune for the Birthday boy/girl and the family!
